California touched winner Fergie Jenkins for a run in the first on triples by Jerry Remy and Mickey Rivers and scored again in the third on a double by Remy and Rivers' single. A seventh-inning homer by Bill Sudakis built the lead to 3-1.

Dick Lange, who relieved Angel starter Frank Tanana in the seventh, walked pinch-hitter Mike Hargrove and then surrendered singles to Jim Spencer and Roy Smalley, the latter driving in the Rangers' second run. Mickey Scott relieved Lange and struck out Roy Howell before Tovar came through with his third hit of the game, scoring Smalley and Toby Harrah, running for Spencer. [The Sporting News]
