The Orioles used bunts and throwing errors by Catfish Hunter and Bobby Bonds to score the decisive run that pinned a 3-1 defeat on the Yankees behind the five-hit hurling of Jim Palmer. Baltimore broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth on bunt singles by Paul Blair and Boby Grich. Hunter threw wildly past first in an attempt to get Grich, Blair scoring when Bonds retrieved the ball in right field and threw wildly to the plate. Grich reached third and, after an intentional walk to Don Baylor, scored the winners' third run on Ken Singleton's sacrifice fly.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the second on singles by Thurman Munson and Chris Chambliss, plus an infield out. Baltimore tied the score in the seventh on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Jim Northrup. [The Sporting News]
