Seldom-used shortstop Mike Tyson contributed a two-run triple and two-run homer as the Cardinals jumped on Steve Carlton early and cruised to an 11-3 victory over the Phillies. St. Louis built a 9-1 lead in the first two innings at Carlton's expense. Luis Melendez and Tyson contributed two-run triples in a six-run first. Reggie Smith added a two-run homer in the second to kayo Carlton, then Ted Simmons greeted reliever Tom Hilgendorf with a solo homer.

Tyson, who was making his first start of the season, drove in the final Cardinal runs with a homer on the heels of Danny Cater's double in the fifth. Bob Gibson, relieved in the eighth by Al Hrabosky, picked up the victory, his first in six starting assignments. [The Sporting News]
