Jim Wynn batted in four runs, three of them with a homer, to enable Andy Messersmith to pitch the Dodgers to a 5-1 victory over the Astros. Messersmith allowed the Astros' run in the second on singles by Bob Watson and Milt May and a sacrifice fly by Tommy Helms. Joe Ferguson tied the score with a homer in the Dodgers' half.

Messersmith helped himself to the go-ahead run, hitting a single in the sixth, moving up on a sacrifice by Davey Lopes and scoring on a single by Wynn. Then in the eighth, after a bunt single by Messersmith and pass to Willie Crawford, Wynn hit his homer to seal Messersmith's fifth straight victory this season and ninth in a row over two years.
