Climaxing a four-hit night, Al Bumbry singled with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to drive in the run that gave the Orioles a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. The Orioles caught up with the Yankees and tied the score in the eighth when pinch-hitter Tom Shopay walked and Bobby Grich hit a homer.

With one out in the ninth, Ken Singleton singled and was sacrificed to second by Brooks Robinson. Elrod Hendricks walked. When Jim Northrup came to the plate as a pinch-hitter, the Yankees brought in Sparky Lyle to replace Doc Medich. The Orioles switched to Tommy Davis, who drew a pass to fill the sacks, setting the stage for Bumbry's hit. [The Sporting News]
