Johnny Bench hit the fifth grand-slam homer of his major league career as the Reds' biggest blow in a 10-2 victory over the Padres. The Reds scored their first two runs in the fourth inning when Joe Morgan drew one of his four straight walks in the game and Tony Perez homered.

In the fifth, singles by Cesar Geronimo, Pete Rose and Dave Concepcion, together with an error, produced two more runs and, after Morgan walked to load the bases, Bench hit his grand slam.
