Randy Jones, who had an 8-22 record as a rookie with the Padres last season, continued his transformation into a winning pitcher by beating the Reds, 3-0. The shutout was the second of the season for Jones, who allowed only four hits in gaining his fourth victory against two defeats.

Gene Locklear backed Jones with four hits and Dave Winfield had two, including a homer. A double by Locklear and single by Steve Huntz supplied the Padres' initial run in the third inning.
