Although kayoed in the seventh inning, Vida Blue received credit for his seventh victory of the season when the Athletics defeated the Yankees, 7-5. The A's scored six of their runs in the third. Joe Rudi knocked in two with a single and Billy Williams delivered two more with another single.

Blue sailed along with a 6-1 lead before surrendering two runs in the sixth on a walk and singles by Elliott Maddox, Thurman Munson and Alex Johnson. Bobby Bonds homered with a man on base to chase Blue in the seventh, but Rudi hit for the circuit in the A's half to provide an extra margin for Jim Todd, who protected Blue's decision.
