A homer by Buddy Bell and the relief work of Dennis Eckersley enabled the Indians to defeat the Twins, 3-2. The Indians got to Vic Albury for two runs in the third inning with the aid of an unusual double. Charlie Spikes walked and when Jack Brohamer laid down a drag bunt, the ball went past second baseman Rod Carew and rolled into the outfield for a two-base hit, Spikes stopping at third. Frank Duffy then drove in both runners with a double. Bell hit his homer in the fifth to provide what proved to be the deciding run. The Twins chased Fritz Peterson in the seventh when Bobby Darwin doubled, Eric Soderholm walked and Larry Hisle singled for a run with none out. Eckersley yielded a sacrifice fly by Steve Braun and issued an intentional pass to Tony Oliva, but retired the Twins in order the rest of the way, striking out four, to receive credit for his first major league save.
