The Cubs scored one run on a balk and another on a wild pitch and passed ball to defeat the Astros, 2-1, giving Steve Stone his fifth straight victory. In the third inning, after a single by Don Kessinger and passes to Rick Monday and Jerry Morales, Doug Konieczny was called for a balk, sending Kessinger home. The Astros tied the score with an unearned run in the fifth. Doug Rader reached second on a throwing error by Bill Madlock and crossed the plate after two out on a single by Greg Gross.

The Cubs put over their winning run in the eighth. Madlock singled and Monday walked. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Madlock scored when catcher Milt May let a pitch by Konieczny get by him for a passed ball. [The Sporting News]
