The Royals, who built up a 7-1 lead, appeared to be on safe ground, but as it turned out they needed another run in the eighth inning to outlast the Tigers, 8-7. Bob Stinson batted in three runs with a pair of doubles and Tony Solaita accounted for two RBIs with a homer and single to pace the Royals to their big lead. Nate Colbert, who tripled and scored in the second inning, started the Tigers' comeback with a two-run homer in the seventh.

The Royals then added what proved to be the deciding run in the eighth. Fred Patek doubled, stopped at third on a single by George Brett and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae. The Tigers almost overtook Royals with four runs in the ninth on singles by Colbert and Bill Freehan, double by Leon Roberts and homer by Dan Meyer before their rally died. [The Sporting News]
