Sparkling relief performances by Tug McGraw, who won the first game and saved the second game, marked the Phillies' 6-3 and 5-3 victories in their sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Reds. Cesar Geronimo homered after Johnny Bench was safe on an error to give the Reds a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the lidlifter, but the Phillies tied the score in their half on a single by Dick Allen, double by Mike Schmidt and single by Bob Boone. Joe Morgan put the Reds ahead again with a round-tripper in the sixth. However in the ninth, Greg Luzinski walked and Allen reached second when Geronimo dropped his long liner to center field. After an intentional pass to Schmidt, Boone grounded into a double play, erasing Schmidt as Terry Harmon scored, running for Luzinski. The Reds then passed Mike Anderson intentionally, leading to the appearance of Ollie Brown, who batted for McGraw and won the game with his first homer of the season.

In the nightcap, Luzinski homered for the Phillies, who broke a 3-3 tie with an unearned run in the seventh inning. Dave Concepcion threw wildly on a grounder by Dave Cash, who reached second on the error. Cash stopped at third on Bowa's fourth straight hit and beat the throw home on a grounder by Garry Maddox.
