A dropped fly ball and stupid baserunning by the Cardinals helped the Giants gain a 10-inning 4-3 victory. Center fielder Luis Melendez dropped Willie Montanez' fly with the bases loaded and none out in the 10th to permit Derrel Thomas to score. Thomas had opened the inning with a triple off reliever Elias Sosa and remained there while Bobby Murcer and Gary Matthews were intentionally walked. The Cards, trailing by one going into the ninth, tied the score when Lou Brock singled, stole second and scored on Melendez' double.

With the bases loaded and one out, Ron Fairly lifted a fly ball to right center which Von Joshua caught but was in no position to throw home. Pinch-runner Ted Martinez broke for the plate, stopped and then resumed running. By that time the ball had reached cutoff man Montanez, whose throw to catcher Dave Rader just nipped Martinez. The game had been a see-saw battle up to the ninth with the Giants twice overcoming Cardinal one-run leads before going ahead in the eighth on Murcer's homer. [The Sporting News]
