The Mets erupted for five runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Astros, 6-4. The Astros led, 3-1, going into the seventh with Dave Roberts on mound. The lefty had ended his brief "retirement" and was making his first appearance since returning to the team. In the decisive frame, Bud Harrelson and pinch-hitter Jesus Alou singled and Felix Millan was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Mets with one out. Rusty Staub's single drove in two runs and sent Roberts into retirement from the game.

The Mets then went ahead on singles by Joe Torre and Wayne Garrett off reliever Joe Niekro. The Astros had obtained the lead by scoring two runs in the first on hits by Roger Metzger, Cesar Cedeno and Cliff Johnson and another in the sixth on Greg Gross' single, a sacrifice and Cedeno's single.
