Nolan Ryan recorded his eighth victory, 5-1, with final-out help from Don Kirkwood, as the Angels broke through with four eighth-inning runs and defeated the Orioles' Mike Torrez. Singles by Tommy Harper, Bruce Bochte and Dave Chalk were good for a 1-0 California lead in the fourth. Al Bumbry's bunt single in the sixth was the first hit off Ryan, who took a 5-0 lead into the ninth after the Angels scored four unearned runs in the eighth.

Mickey Rivers' single and an error by Mark Belanger on Harper's grounder plus a walk to Bochte set the stage for Leroy Stanton's bases-clearing double after Chalk's grounder forced Rivers at the plate. Tom Egan singled home Stanton with the final run of the inning. Baltimore's second -- and last -- hit was a run-scoring double by Tommy Davis in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
