Tossing a four-hitter at his former teammates, Catfish Hunter was staked to a seven-run lead after only four innings and cruised to his fifth victory as the Yankees turned back the Athletics, 9-1. The A's only run was the result of a walk to Gene Tenace and singles by Claudell Washington and Phil Garner in the third.

Bobby Bonds opened the N. Y. scoring in the first with a triple, then rode home on a sacrifice fly by Elliott Maddox. The Yankees tacked on two runs in the second, one in third on Thurman Munson's homer, then wrapped up their victory with four runs on only one hit in the fourth. Three walks, a hit batsman, an error, sacrifice flies by Maddox and Munson and a single by Sandy Alomar gave Hunter an 8-1 margin. [The Sporting News]
