Jorge Orta's bases-loaded single off the foot of loser Doyle Alexander accounted for all of Chicago's scoring as the White Sox tallied twice in the third to edge the Orioles, 2-1. Orta delivered after Tony Muser and Bucky Dent singled and Pat Kelly walked.

Baltimore's only run off winner Stan Bahnsen came in the second when Don Baylor homered. Reliever Rich Gossage worked out of a one-out, first-and-third jam in the seventh by getting Mark Belanger to hit into a force play, pinch-runner Tom Shopay holding third, then forcing Ken Singleton to ground into a double play.
