The Red Sox snapped a 5-5 tie with a four-run, seventh-inning flurry and went on to defeat the Athletics, 10-5. Oakland had pulled even in the top of the inning on Gene Tenace's three-run homer. The Boston surge began when Juan Beniquez walked and scored from first on Rick Burleson's hit-and-run single. Following a walk to Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice doubled home two more runs, then scored himself on Dwight Evans' two-bagger.

Boston's first hit off starter Dave Hamilton was Rico Petrocelli's homer with one out in the fifth. The Athletics then committed three errors as the Red Sox scored four more to take a 5-2 lead. Oakland led 2-0 after two tallied on Joe Rudi's RBI double in the opening inning and the first of Tenace's two homers, a solo shot in the second. [The Sporting News]
