Defensive letdowns by loser Steve Carlton and shortstop Larry Bowa led to the end of the Phillies' seven-game winning streak as the Astros scored three unearned runs and came out on top, 4-2. Carlton's wild pickoff attempt at first base in the first inning allowed the Astros' Greg Gross to score from third with the first run of the game. Houston got two more in the fourth on one hit, a wild pitch and two throwing errors by Bowa. Bob Watson's eighth homer of the year accounted for the final Houston run in the sixth. Astros' outfielders Gross and Enos Cabell threw out Phillie runners at the plate to help preserve starter Tom Griffin's second victory. [The Sporting News] |
