Chipping in with a three-run double in the third inning, Mike Caldwell won for the first time in six mound decisions as the Giants turned back the Pirates, 6-4. The San Francisco starter also had a hand in the Giants' first run. His single, a walk and a base hit by Von Joshua gave the home club a 1-0 lead in the second. Caldwell's two-bagger cleared the bases in the next frame as the Giants scored four times.

After the Pirates countered with three runs in the fourth on a walk, single by Manny Sanguillen and doubles by Rennie Stennett and Dave Parker, the Giants tacked on an insurance run in the home half on a pair of walks and two infield outs.
