Bill Lee needed only 78 pitches to shut out the Athletics, while Jim Rice, Tony Conigliaro and Juan Beniquez provided home-run support as the Red Sox defeated the Orioles, 7-0. Boston kayoed Vida Blue with six runs in the first five innings, getting two in the second on singles by Dwight Evans and Conigliaro, a walk and Beniquez' double.

Rice homered in the third and Conigliaro in the fourth, and the Sox knocked out Blue with a two-run fifth. Beniquez closed out the scoring with his first homer in the sixth.
