Reliever Rich Gossage twice pitched out of bases-loaded jams as the White Sox edged the Orioles, 2-1. The Sox scored their runs in the third as Brian Downing opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on Bob Coluccio's single. The runners moved up on Bucky Dent's sacrifice and scored on Carlos May's single. Sox starter Jim Kaat got in trouble in the sixth stanza when he yielded a single to Tommy Davis and walks to Don Baylor, Bobby Grich and Lee May to force in a run. Gossage then came on with two out to strike out pinch-hitter Jim Northrup.

Brooks Robinson and pinch-hitter Tom Shopay singled in the seventh and advanced on a sacrifice. Gossage walked pinch-hitter Al Bumbry intentionally, struck out Davis and retired Baylor to stop the threat again.
