The Pirates got a first-inning run on a walk to Richie Hebner and singles by Oliver and Dave Parker. Their second marker came in the third on Richie Hebner's single and Oliver's RBI double. Jim Rooker, who hurled the first seven frames and was credited with the victory, was aided by outstanding fielding plays. Second baseman Rennie Stennett robbed Bobby Tolan of a run-producing single in the fifth and shortstop Mario Mendoza smothered a seventh-inning Padre rally by throwing out Fred Kendall at the plate.
