A ninth-inning triple by rookie pinch-hitter Glenn Adams and clutch relief pitching by rookie lefty Gary Lavelle carried the Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. After George Mitterwald's solo homer tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the eighth, Dave Rader got a one-out infield hit and Adams broke the tie with a line-shot three-bagger to left. He then scored what proved to be the clinching run on Von Joshua's single.
