Deron Johnson singled to score both runners. The Sox then loaded the bases on a double by Tony Muser and intentional pass to Bucky Dent. Brian Downing's sacrifice fly scored Johnson.

The Tigers had kayoed starter Wilbur Wood in the sixth after Gary Sutherland and Dan Meyer got consecutive singles. Terry Forster came on to give up a run-scoring single to Willie Horton but then retired the next three batters. He got credit for the win but was forced to leave the game with two out in the eighth when he suffered a strain in his pitching shoulder. [The Sporting News]
