The White Sox broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run rally in the sixth and notched a 6-1 triumph over the Tigers. The big inning began when Jorge Orta led off with a double and scored on Carlos May's single. Ron LeFlore dropped Bill Melton's fly for a two-base error, May reaching third on the play. Deron Johnson singled to score both runners. The Sox then loaded the bases on a double by Tony Muser and intentional pass to Bucky Dent. Brian Downing's sacrifice fly scored Johnson.

The Tigers had kayoed starter Wilbur Wood in the sixth after Gary Sutherland and Dan Meyer got consecutive singles. Terry Forster came on to give up a run-scoring single to Willie Horton but then retired the next three batters. He got credit for the win but was forced to leave the game with two out in the eighth when he suffered a strain in his pitching shoulder. [The Sporting News]
