Fred Kendall lined a single to left in the ninth inning to score Dave Winfield and give the Padres a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. Winfield reached first with one out on an error by shortstop Paul Popovich and moved to second on Mike Ivie's infield hit. Kendall then hit a 1-1 pitch for his third safety of the game.

The Pirates had tied the contest in the sixth on Willie Stargell's homer which followed Al Oliver's single. The first Pirate run came in the third on singles by Mario Mendoza, Ken Brett and Rennie Stennett. The Padres took a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Their first two runs came on Tito Fuentes' homer and, after two were out, two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Bobby Tolan was hit by a pitch to force home another run. [The Sporting News]
