Hal McRae's three-run double ended a four-run ninth-inning rally to give the Royals a 5-4 verdict over the Orioles. Bird starter Mike Torrez cruised into the ninth with a 4-1 lead but was given the hook by manager Earl Weaver after yielding a leadoff double to George Brett. Bob Reynolds relieved and was tagged for a run-scoring double by Vada Pinson. After Fran Healy grounded out, Reynolds walked pinch-hitter Tony Solaita. Wayne Garland replaced Reynolds and walked Amos Otis to load the bases before McRae belted the game-winning hit.

Jim Northrup's RBI single in the third, Dave Duncan's two-run homer and a run scoring while a double play was being made in the fifth had given the Orioles a 4-0 lead. The Royals' first run came in the eighth when McRae singled, moved to second on a walk and scored on John Mayberry's single. [The Sporting News]
