Joe Morgan's two-out single in the 11th inning off Tug McGraw gave the Reds a 3-2 triumph over the Phillies. Merv Rettenmund's single touched off the winning rally. He moved to second and Cesar Geronimo was safe on a sacrifice attempt as Dick Allen was charged with an error after failing to cover first.

Pinch-hitter Doug Flynn and Pete Rose failed to produce, each hitting infield grounders, but then Morgan came through with his key bingle. Phil starter Steve Carlton left after five innings because of being bothered by a cold. His successor, Gene Garber, gave up two homers to Johnny Bench. [The Sporting News]
