Woodie Fryman spotted the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the first, one run scoring on a wild pitch, but settled down on the hill. The veteran hurler contributed an RBI double and went the route as the Expos turned back Los Angeles, 5-3. A walk to Tim Foli, two groundouts, a balk by loser Doug Rau and single by Larry Parrish around a pass to Gary Carter tied the score in the home half of the first.

Carter, Bob Bailey and Larry Lintz, the latter a replacement when second baseman Pete Mackanin sprained an ankle, all hit singles in the third to give Montreal a 3-2 lead. Doubles by Mike Jorgensen and Fryman increased the lead to 4-2 in the fourth. Fryman then moved to third on Pepe Mangual's single and scored on a squeeze bunt by Foli.
