The Phillies subdued the Padres, 5-1, behind the five-hit hurling of Steve Carlton and hitting by Mike Schmidt, who drove in three runs with a single and homer. The winners scored once in the first off loser Dave Freisleben on Dave Cash's single, a double by Schmidt and an infield out. Schmidt, batting .181 entering the game, made it 3-0 in the third, hitting his seventh homer of the season after a double by Cash.

That duo produced the fourth Philly run in the seventh when Cash singled, went to third on a wild pickoff throw by reliever Danny Frisella and scored on Schmidt's single. The Padres' only run came in top of the frame on a double by Tito Fuentes and single by Randy Hundley. Mike Anderson closed out the scoring with a solo homer in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
