In the early going, Willie Horton homered for the Tigers and Leroy Stanton for the Angels, who took a 4-3 lead in the eighth when Jerry Remy doubled and Tommy Harper singled. The Tigers opened the ninth with singles by Leon Roberts and Nate Colbert to kayo Frank Tanana. Dave Sells gave up a run-scoring single by Bill Freehan and walked Gates Brown.

With Mickey Scott taking over, Colbert beat the throw home on a grounder by Ben Oglivie. Ron LeFlore forced Freehan at the plate, but Gary Sutherland came through with a two-run single and Dan Meyer drove in the Tigers' final run with another single.
