Sending 10 men to bat, the Cubs erupted for four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Giants, 8-4. The Cubs tagged Pete Falcone for three runs in the first. Don Kessinger doubled, moved up on an infield out and crossed the plate on a balk. A triple by Rick Monday and two walks then loaded the bases and Manny Trillo singled to drive in two runs. The Giants, after picking up a tally in the second, went ahead with three runs in the sixth on a walk to Gary Thomasson and successive singles by Derrel Thomas, Bobby Murcer, Glenn Adams and Willie Montanez.

The Cubs pulled even in their half when Bill Madlock and Monday doubled. The tie-breaking outburst that followed in the eighth was fashioned with singles by Kessinger, Jose Cardenal and Madlock, a walk to Monday, singles by George Mitterwald and Trillo and a sacrifice fly by Steve Swisher.
