Johnny Bench, Dan Driessen and Joe Morgan smashed homers as the Reds overpowered the Cubs, 8-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Jack Billingham. Bench also singled and drew a pass with the bases loaded to finish the game with four RBIs. Bench and Driessen hit their homers in succession in the second inning. Bench knocked in two more runs with a single in the third. Morgan added his homer in the fifth.

The Cubs staged their only threat when they loaded the bases on singles by Pete LaCock, Don Kessinger and Jose Cardenal in the sixth, but Billingham got out of that jam at the expense of only one run on a grounder by Bill Madlock. The Reds then counted their last three runs in the home half of the sixth when Cub relievers Eddie Watt, Ken Frailing and Bob Locker each issued a pass with the bases loaded. [The Sporting News]
