Bobby Bonds hit two homers and drove in three runs to lead the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the White Sox. Bonds opened the game with the 200th homer of his major league career and 30th as a leadoff batter. The White Sox came back with a pair in the second on the walk to Ken Henderson, single by Tony Muser and double by Jorge Orta, but the Yankees regained the lead in the fifth when Fred Stanley singled and Bonds hit his second homer of the game.

A double by Graig Nettles, a wild pitch and infield out added a Yankee run in the seventh. After the White Sox scored in their half on a single by Bucky Dent and double by Pat Kelly, the Yankees wrapped up their victory with two runs in the eighth when Thurman Munson was safe on an error, Chris Chambliss tripled and Ed Herrmann singled.
