Scoring two runs in the ninth inning, the Angels beat Catfish Hunter, 5-3, and ended the Yankees' eight-game winning streak. The Yankees scored all their runs off Bill Singer on homers. Jim Mason hit for the circuit with a man on base in the second before the Angels picked up their first run on a single by Jerry Remy and triple by Mickey Rivers in the fifth. Roy White then made it 3-1 for the Yankees with a round-tripper in the sixth.

The Angels came back with the tying pair in the seventh. Rivers singled, advanced on an infield out and scored when Joe Lahoud singled. Morris Nettles, coming in to run for Lahoud, stole second and continued home with the tying run on a wild throw by catcher Thurman Munson. In the ninth, Dave Collins walked and Remy sacrificed.
