Although collecting 16 hits, the Cardinals wasted many of their scoring opportunities before beating the Braves, 5-4, for their seventh straight victory. Blue Moon Odom, obtained from the Indians, made his first N. L. start for the Braves and was knocked out in the fifth inning. The Cards scored their first run on a balk by Odom in the opening frame, but the Braves then staked their new hurler to a 2-1 lead before the Cardinals tied the score in the fourth on a single by Ken Reitz, pass to Mario Guerrero and single by Lou Brock.

Reggie Smith walked in the fifth and Ted Simmons homered, chasing Odom. The Cards added the deciding run in the seventh on a walk to Simmons, single by Guerrero and double by Reitz. The best the Braves could do thereafter was tighten the score with a two-run homer by Cito Gaston in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
