Jim Sundberg hit the first grand-slam of his major league career among four Ranger homers in a 12-4 trouncing of the Red Sox. Sundberg connected for his jackpot wallop off Rick Wise in the second inning. Not to be outdone by Sundberg, Bernie Carbo also hit a grand slam for the Red Sox off Jackie Brown in the sixth.

Brown came into the game with two out in the third when starter Bill Hands pulled a leg muscle and was forced to retire. Following Sundberg's smash, Jeff Burroughs homered for the Rangers in the fifth and Toby Harrah and Jim Spencer each rapped a round-tripper with a man on base in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
