The Cardinals' seven-game winning streak came to an end when they ran up against Don Gullett's mastery and lost to the Reds, 3-1. Gullett, beating the Cardinals for the 11th time in 14 career decisions, was deprived of a shutout when Ted Simmons homered in the ninth inning.

The Reds reached Bob Forsch for two runs in the third on a double by Gullett, singles by Pete Rose and Ken Griffey and an infield out by Dave Concepcion.
