Making his first start of the season after 23 relief appearances, Jim Umbarger emerged with a victory when the Rangers defeated the Indians, 2-1. Fritz Peterson, who started for the Indians, allowed just three hits through the first seven innings before allowing the Rangers' first run on a walk to Roy Smalley and two-out double by Cesar Tovar.

Tom Buskey relieved and Toby Harrah also doubled, sending Tovar home with what proved to be the winning run. Umbarger weakened in the ninth and yielded the Indians' run with one out on back-to-back doubles by Rico Carty and Boog Powell.
