The Royals, who had defeated Nolan Ryan only twice in 14 previous decisions, jumped on the ace righthander for four runs in the first inning and went on to wallop the Angels, 13-0. Ryan left the game after pulling a groin muscle while pitching to Hal McRae, leadoff batter in the third inning.

The Royals began their scoring against Ryan with a single by George Brett, pass to Amos Otis and single by McRae. Another run crossed the plate on an infield out by John Mayberry. After Tony Solaita walked, a single by Fran Healy and double by Cookie Rojas each accounted for an RBI. After Ryan departed, the Royals resumed their attack against three Angel relievers.
