A grand-slam homer by Roy Smalley in the eighth inning sewed up the Rangers' 10-3 victory over the White Sox. The Rangers broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the sixth. Cesar Tovar was hit by a pitch and Toby Harrah reached base on an error. Jim Fregosi singled to drive in Tovar.

Tom Grieve doubled, scoring Harrah and Fregosi. Lenny Randle then capped the outburst with a double to plate Grieve. Smalley hit his slam off Bill Gogolewski after singles by Mike Hargrove and Randle and a pass to Leo Cardenas. The White Sox scored their runs on homers by Bill Melton, Deron Johnson and Carlos May.
