Bill Buckner doubled in the eighth inning and scored on a double by Willie Crawford to give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the Padres. Al Downing pitched the first six innings for the Dodgers and left with a 2-1 lead.

After Mike Marshall took over, the Padres tied the score in the seventh with an unearned run on an infield hit by Bobby Tolan, wild throw by Ron Cey and single by Fred Kendall. Buckner then hit his double in the eighth and scored the winning run with one out when Crawford smashed his double past Willie McCovey down the right field line. [The Sporting News]
