Rusty Staub's single in the eighth snapped a 1-1 tie and the Mets went on to score three more times to beat the Cubs, 5-1. Staub delivered following two walks and a sacrifice. Ed Kranepool then singled home the second run of the frame. With two out, a passed ball and intentional walk loaded the bases. Jerry Grote beat out an infield hit for an RBI and winning pitcher George Stone capped the rally with a run-scoring single.

The Cubs' lone run came inthe third on an error, stolen base and single by Jose Cardenal. The Mets tied the score in the sixth on Kranepool's single and a two-out double by Dave Kingman. [The Sporting News]
