Buddy Bradford hit his first two homers in a St. Louis uniform, each with a man on base, but that was not enough for the Cardinals, who lost to the Phillies, 7-4. The Phillies, in beating Bob Gibson, broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fourth inning. Dick Allen singled and trotted home on a triple by Bob Boone.

After a pass to Garry Maddox, Tom Underwood laid down a squeeze bunt, scoring Boone. Dave Cash singled, driving in Maddox. An infield hit by Larry Bowa, on which Gibson threw wildly to first, then allowed Cash to cross the plate with the fourth run of the frame. [The Sporting News]
