Bob Watson singled with one out in the fourth, moved to second on a wild pitch and, after Cliff Johnson walked, scored on Doug Rader's double. Roger Metzger received an intentional walk but another run then scored on a passed ball.

The bases were reloaded on another intentional walk, this one to pinch-hitter Ken Boswell, and Dierker then helped his own cause, driving in a run with a sacrifice bunt.
