Four hits by Rose, who scored three runs and drove in one, paced the Reds to a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers. John Hale homered for the Dodgers, who were locked in a 3-3 tie with the Reds before a single by Pete Rose, errors by Ron Cey and Doug Rau and sacrifice fly by Johnny Bench broke the deadlock in the fifth inning.

The Reds then added an insurance run in the eighth on a single by Merv Rettenmund, pass to Jack Billingham and double by Rose.
