. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Billy Martin made a successful debut as manager of the Yankees, succeeding Bill Virdon, with a 5-3 victory over the Indians before an Oldtimers Day crowd of 43,968. Boog Powell homered with two men on base for the Indians' runs in the sixth inning.

The Yankees came back with a pair in their half and then won with three runs in the eighth. After infield hits by Roy White and Thurman Munson, Martin disdained a sacrifice and let Graig Nettles swing away for the single that drove in the tying run. Chris Chambliss followed with a single to put the Yankees ahead. Sandy Alomar drove in another run with a single later in the inning to clinch the outcome. [The Sporting News]
