After rain delayed the start of play for two hours and 17 minutes, Bob Forsch went out and pitched the Cardinals to a 4-0 victory over the Cubs in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was postponed because of darkness. The Cardinals got to Rick Reuschel for a run in the fourth inning on a double by Ron Fairly and single by Ted Simmons. A single by Bake McBride and triple by Willie Davis added a tally in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
