After both advanced following a flyout by Cliff Johnson, the Pirates passed Doug Rader intentionally to load the bases in a move that backfired. Tommy Helms also walked to force in the Astros' first run.

Skip Jutze singled for two more and the fourth run crossed the plate when Manny Sanguillen made a wild throw to third after handling the ball from the outfield. J.R.
