Paced by Tony Perez, who rapped four hits and drove in four runs, the Reds defeated the Cubs in a free-swinging contest, 12-8. The Reds collected 18 hits, with Joe Morgan and George Foster getting three apiece. Bill Madlock had four of the Cubs' 16 hits and Jose Cardenal batted in four runs with a triple and two doubles.

Dan Driessen drove in two runs with a triple when the Reds tied the score at 6-6 in the third inning. A double by Pedro Borbon, infield out and balk produced the go-ahead run for the Reds in the fourth and they added another on a walk to Morgan and singles by Perez and Foster. The Cubs knotted the count in the sixth, but the Reds went ahead to stay with three runs in their half.
